So Long Leo, I Love You

Leo cinched his straps on his Kevlar vest, ensuring the fit was as snug as a blacksmith’s custom-forged breastplate. Today was the day. His chariot—a slightly dented, matte-black Honda Civic—sat idling in the driveway, ready to transport him from the peaceful suburbs to the thunderous realms of basic training.

He was a modern youth, fluent in group chats, streaming algorithms, and the precise art of the perfect espresso pull. Yet, deep in his chest beat the heart of an ancient paladin. To Leo, the upcoming enlistment wasn’t just a contract; it was a sacred quest.

His mother stood by the porch, holding a travel mug of coffee like a high priestess offering a talisman of protection.

"Fear not, Lady Mother," Leo said, his voice dropping an octave into a formal cadence that didn't quite match his backward baseball cap. "I shall write to thee weekly via the electronic scrolls. My discipline shall remain absolute, and my boots shall mirror the morning sun."

She smiled through rising tears, playing along. "Just promise me you’ll keep your visor down and your chin strap secure, Sir Leo."

He knelt on one knee on the asphalt, placing a hand over his heart. "By my honor, and by the constitution of the realm, I shall return victorious. Or at least with a significantly higher credit score and better posture."

With a final, lingering embrace, he climbed into his steel steed. He adjusted his mirrors, checked his blind spots, and gripped the steering wheel like the hilt of Excalibur. As he shifted into drive, the radio automatically blared a heavy metal anthem, sounding remarkably like war horns summoning a champion to the front lines.

He drove away into the shimmering horizon, a knight of tomorrow bound by duty, leaving behind him the comfort of the kingdom to protect its borders.

...

There’s a tear in the eye of the brave,

For the land that he marches to save.

Through the hot, heavy smoke,

And the vows that he spoke,

To the stars and the stripes he just gave.
